Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 17, 2026

This is a translation of the French Privacy Policy. If the two versions differ, the French version prevails.

In short

We collect the minimum needed for the app to work. We don't sell any data and we use no tracking or audience measurement tools. To fix errors, we also use Sentry, which receives no data that could identify you (see “Error reports”).

What we keep

  • Your email address, your username, and your account's technical identifier, to create your account, sign you in, and link your data to it.
  • Your library: series you follow, progress (chapters and volumes read), shelves, favorites, box sets and special editions you check, volumes you own, items you add to your collection, personal ratings, reading lists, your “Within Reach” rows, and the series outside your library for which you turned on release notifications.
  • The dated log of the chapters you've read, used for your statistics.
  • Your comments and your volume reviews, your reactions (to comments, chapters, and volumes), your chapter and volume ratings, and your votes for a character.
  • Your profile photo and your banner, if you add them: only you can see them. Choosing a drawn avatar removes the photo; going back to the pastel removes the banner.
  • Your friends and friend requests, and your choice to show your progress to your friends or not.
  • If you state that you are under 18 in the United States, we keep only this restriction, to limit access to sensitive content.
  • Your reports of messages or usernames and, if any of your content or your account is moderated, the record of the decision.
  • The volumes you suggest and the errors you report on a series page, with your message and, if you provide them, a date or a cover link. The team reads them before anything is published. Once handled, a suggestion stays linked to your account for thirty days, so you can see the team's answer; after that, we keep only how many of your suggestions were accepted and declined. The suggestions you send (volumes or series) may be analyzed by an artificial intelligence service (Anthropic) to help our moderation; your identity is never passed on to it.
  • Moderation decisions about you stay linked to your account for thirty days, so you can read them.

We use your progress and the genres of the series in your library to compute your “For You” suggestions.

If you sign in with Apple and hide your email address, we only receive a relay address and don't know your real address.

What we don't collect

No location, no contacts from your phone, no advertising identifier, no browsing history. The app doesn't access your photo library: only the profile photo you choose yourself is sent. The camera is used to read your volumes' barcodes and, if you wish, to photograph your collection; no photo taken with the camera is sent to Manga Shiori. The photos you add to your collection stay on your iPhone and in your iCloud. The notifications system permission is requested only if you turn on reading reminders or volume release alerts; these reminders and alerts are scheduled on your iPhone and nothing about them is sent to our servers. Series covers are loaded from Kitsu and AniList, and volume covers from the official websites of French publishers or their distributors, or from the Bibliothèque nationale de France: those sites then receive your IP address, like any website you visit. A few volume covers are stored on our own servers, in Frankfurt. Links to Amazon and BDfugue only send them the volume's reference and our partner code, never your account or your data.

Error reports

When the app or our servers run into an error, a technical report may be sent to Sentry, the service that helps us fix it. It describes the error, the screen where it happened (for example “series page” or “Reading”), and your device (model and versions), without your email, username, account, library, or messages, and without keeping your IP address. These reports are hosted in Frankfurt by Sentry, an American company that processes them on our behalf only, and are deleted after 30 days. We do this on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing you with an app that works.

Translations

Translations are made by your iPhone (an Apple service); nothing is sent to us.

Where your data is

On Supabase's servers, hosted in Frankfurt, in the European Union. Exchanges are encrypted. The database's access rules protect each account's private data. Usernames and content posted in discussions remain visible to other readers; your personal photo is accessible only to you.

Your friends see your username and your drawn avatar. Your ongoing series, the chapter you're on, and your completed series are visible to them only if you've chosen “Show my progress to my friends”; you can change your mind at any time in Settings. Neither your photo nor your banner is shown to them. Blocking someone ends your friendship.

How long

We keep the data linked to your account for as long as the account exists. When you ask to delete your account, it happens seven days later; until then, signing back in cancels it. When your account deletion completes, the data linked to it in the database — profile, library, progress, lists, reading log, comments, reactions, ratings, votes, friends and friend requests, pending volume suggestions, answers to your suggestions, moderation decisions about you, the counts of accepted and declined suggestions, reports, and age restriction — is deleted. The profile photo and the banner are deleted separately from storage.

One exception concerns moderation decisions: we keep their date, the measure taken, and the reason for two years. When the account concerned is deleted, its identifier and the copy of the content are removed from the record.

Why we're allowed to do this

  • Your account, your library, your discussions, and your friends: this is the service you ask for by using the app (performance of the terms of use).
  • Showing your progress to your friends and receiving reading reminders: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in Settings.
  • Moderation, reports, and protection against abuse: our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe and following the App Store rules.

The Lab (the website's roadmap)

You can suggest an idea, vote, or comment without an account. We then store the text of the idea or comment and the first name you choose, which become public once reviewed by the team, along with an encrypted fingerprint of a token kept in your browser, which prevents your vote from being counted twice. If you report an idea or a comment, we keep the reason, the detail you add (300 characters at most), and your token's fingerprint. To limit abuse, an encrypted fingerprint of your IP address, recalculated every day, counts submissions; these counters are erased after 48 hours. Votes are kept as long as the idea is on the roadmap. Ideas and comments are erased one year after an idea has been delivered or declined, and those never published, one year after they were sent. Reports are erased one year after they are handled, or one year after they were sent if they were never handled. To have an idea or a comment removed, write to us.

Your rights

The European regulation (GDPR) gives you the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to object. You can delete your account directly from Settings. For any other request, write to us: we reply within one month. If you believe your rights are not respected, you can lodge a complaint with the CNIL, the French data protection authority (cnil.fr), or with the data protection authority of the country where you live: for example the Data Protection Commission in Ireland, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in New Zealand.

Children

Manga Shiori is not meant for children under 13. If you are under 13, do not create an account. If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we delete it. Where the law of your country sets a higher age for agreeing to a feature on your own (for example 16 in Ireland), ask a parent before turning on “Show my progress to my friends” or reading reminders.

Where the law requires it (for example in some US states), Apple may share your age range with the app. We use it only to adapt the app to your age: if you are a minor, public discussions and friends may be limited. Your age range stays on your iPhone; we do not send it to our servers. We keep only an indication “limited account: yes or no” to apply these limits, which is deleted along with your account.
